The Frank Boys Train for White Grass: Igloo building, snow shoveling, Extended hours in snow play and a little strap-on skiing....there almost ready Chip! Love, Dave I am not usually the kind of guy to quote the most powerful church leader inthe world, but this one was good. It was said in the context of skiing."In the mountains, the ugly hubbub of the city disappears and the quiet of immeasurable distances prevails, which allows a person to more clearly hear theinner echo of the voice of God."Pope JP II...It actually reminds me of some of the quotes from John Muir, although he too wasknown as a very religious man.later, marc Started mt. biking hard again now that it's spring, but still yearn for thesnow now and then - love all the daily pics!!!! Might make it up there inthe next few weeks, if there's any snow left. Must have been 81-82, when Iwas still on my old wooden Tur Langren's (sp?). You and your folks are thenicest down to earth nords I've ever met, and I'm always preaching thegospel of Whitegrass any chance I get! Can't wait until next season!Love searching the web and seeing Sue's latest and greatest mt. bikingfeats. Had a chance to ride with her at Slatyfork during Fat Tire Festseveral years ago, as well as watch her race... It's liking watching poetryin motion... Anyway, have a great Spring, Summer, Fall, and can't wait 'tilthe snow flies again! George Flam
Imagine there's no chairlifts, Imagine no concessions, Imagine no aggressions, You may say Im a dreamer, sent by Bruce Mechum via telemarktips.com Clever! I like it a lot...Imagine there's no skinning, too...just natural climbing...ha! Off to the film fest at 123 Pleasant Street...Freakie Stylie! Cory For any Whitegrass diehards (yourself?) who long for the groomed, Prospect Mtn. in So. VT is 100% open today, 4/7, reporting good granular skiing.I believe they're the only xc area east of the Rockies, still open,.It'll be a perfect sun 'n' corn snow weekend in So. VT this weekend. Tons' of snow in the b.c. up there too, with endless terrain flat, steep and in-between.Prospect's on VT 9, a ways west of Wilmington/Mt. Snow, and just above Bennington, VT. They, like you, have old lift-serviced trs. available as well, accessed from the old service rd. ("Mtn. Tr."). One or two of the old alpine novice rte's off the summit are usually groomed side-to-side with the tiller, giving fabulous runs on toothpick track skis if the corn is soft.I'm a friend of Lloyd and Sue Crawford's (Stump Sprouts). I emailed you last year about our windmill prob., which is rapidly turning into a catastrophe for the Berkshires.C'mon up! Briing the W.G. crew. (the chores can wait). If Lloyd doesn't have guests at the lodge, I'll be we could get him out too (he's supposed to be cutting firewood!!???).Dave Maxcy

"The best food in the valley is widely recognized to be at the White Grass Cafe. Thoughtful soups and hearty sandwiches (around $6) fill the joint at lunch, daily during ski season. Dinner offerings (Thursday through Sunday) like Thai shrimp with cilantro and salmon with miso sauce are why you'll find the White Grass Cookbook in a lot of Washington kitchens. Entrees are in the $13 to $20 range." Steve Hendrix, Washington Post Feb 05 Thank you for dining with us! See you next year. Contact us for your catering needs this summer. Laurie and Figs |

Speeder Tailgaiter Last Friday afternoon/evening is on my list of most phenomenal skis ever. We started out before sunset towards the tangerine ridge under saphire skies. Rarely is it that clear even here. Above 3500, upper tree branches were coated with heavy tufts of rime. From underneath, rime clouds hung over. Gradually fading to a strip of orange and crimson, the saphire blue brilliant moonlit sky spread. Trees becoming spring budding silouettes. Dry, fast groomed snow. The ridgetop moon streaked long shadows across the trail. Only tiny chirps, trickling cascades, and a woodpecker could be heard. Pure white ground under steel blue sky. The sweetest 3-mile glide down.Experiencing one of those moments is a reminder of the magic that draws us to the valley. Over and over again. You just have to be there. And be ready. Pat, Heather, Eden Enjoyed talking to you at the end of my 4-hour ski outing at Whitegrass today. Let me compliment you on your excellent trail system, your trail grooming and friendly staff. Let me say that I am spoiled when it comes to XC skiing, since i was born and raised in Oslo, Norway. There, I could always ski from my suburban doorstep onto several 100 Kilometers of excellent trails during the winter season- several miles are also lighted because oft he early dark in the winter. My son and I have been coming to Whitegrass for about 7 years or so (from Manassas, VA) we really enjoy your trails and backcountry trips into Dolly Sods when the snow allows. Reminds me quite a bit of back home in certain areas. You have so much to offer for all ages and skill levels of XC'ers. I can strongly recommend anyone interested in XC skiing to visit your excellent facilities- you got'em where it counts, namely the trails and overall terrain. Chip; the only thing I omitted from my email was the fact that Ihave been XC'd for 55 years. My mother still skied last winter at the age of 91, See you again when the snow is there - like you say; it is there gotta be used. Jo Storaker Trying hard to get to WG this winter. But it's a long drive from Detroit. My regards on the best skiing website in America (and I have a lot of them bookmarked). Dave Bastine We finally made the first of what will be many trips to White Grass on Saturday. Grew up in Maine, able to ski out my front door, but haven't done nearly enough skiing since moving to the the DC area years ago. Hope to make up for it now that we know it's truly worth the drive. Sorry we didn't try it sooner. The lodge has a great feel as soon as you walk in. We loved the atmosphere, the very friendly people, the great food, music, to say nothing of the great skiing. The trails offer everything you could want. I liked being able to work on my stride along the snow farm and then have fun with the turns on 3 mile. My wife, daughter and I had a fantastic time, and look forward to returning President's day weekend. Wishing you a snowy winter. Peter McKeen We deviated from tradition for birthday #48. Instead of our annual pilgrimage to White Grass, we went to Bretton Woods, NH. 3-4" of fresh powder every morning... 90 Km of groomed trails... Two (!!!) PistonBullys... WOW. Here is a picture of Michael with the grand hotel in the background. Don't worry, we still love White Grass...Best regards, Alan Romefelt ...great to see you this week as far as I am concerned the snow is a bonus compared to all the great folks over there at WG. When my 3 year old saw his picture on the site he wanted to know where Chipper was? Thanks Chip, and my kids really improved over there in 2 days. Stay well. The pure spirit of skiing and the good life is alive and well and living at Whitegrass. I know of no other place where skiers gather and get closer to that wonderful spiritual aspect of skiing and fellowship. That special place in us ( all of us nords ) that makes us want to go outside put on our skis and have fun. Whitegrass is quite simply my favorite ski area in North America.
